The Education Workforce Council has today published the results of a quantitative research study carried out on behalf of the Welsh Government between the 31 October 2016 and 9 January 2017 on the experiences of registered education practitioners working in Wales.

Due to the recent events a heightened state of vigilance continues to be required for all educational visits. The Central South Consortium is following advice and is not currently advising that future travel should be cancelled. Parental concerns should be respected but if consent to travel is withdrawn it is unlikely travel insurance policies would cover any financial losses incurred.
Consortium Welcomes New Managing Director

We recently announced the appointment of Hannah Woodhouse as deputy Regional Schools Commissioner for the South West of England.  We are delighted to announce today that following an extensive search and interview process, Mike Glavin has been appointed to replace Hannah in the post of Managing Director of Central South Consortium. Mike will take up this post with effect from the start of the summer term.

Following a review by Qualifications Wales, the WJEC has recently announced that it will accept both the new GCSE mathematics numeracy and GCSE mathematics as satisfying the numeracy requirements of the Welsh Baccalaureate Qualification awards (previously just the new GCSE mathematics numeracy was to be accepted).

Central South Wales Challenge - Case Studies and Progress to Date

Since January 2014 schools across the five Central South local authorities have been collaborating in order to find more effective ways of improving the quality of education for all of their children and young people. A significant feature of this work has been School Improvement Groups (SIGs), a cross-local authority model where a headteacher in each group acts as a convenor and co-ordinates a group of school leaders collaborating on school improvement.

Final GCSE results for schools across Bridgend, Cardiff, Merthyr Tydfil, Rhondda Cynon Taf and the Vale of Glamorgan published today showed the percentage of pupils achieving 5 GCSE passes at grades A* - C including English/Welsh and mathematics (L2+) across the Central South region has improved by 4.4% points to 58.5%, up from 54.1% in 2014 and 47.8% in 2012.

Ipsos MORI - Closing the Gaps Report
Ipsos MORI was commissioned by the Central South Consortium (CSC) to conduct research with six case study schools in summer 2015. CSC has identified ten ‘Hub’ schools to work with to promote a region-wide focus on closing the educational attainment gap between pupils who are eligible for Free School Meals (e-FSM) or are looked after (LAC) and other pupils.

The audit tool has been developed in response to an identified need to support schools in the self-evaluation process for the Foundation Phase.  It has been scrutinised by Headteachers from the Foundation Phase steering group and trialled in a number of schools in the region with positive outcomes in terms of helping to identify good practice and provision and to highlight areas for improvement.

2015 sees the return of the Sport Wales School Sport Survey. The third national School Sport Survey will provide an opportunity for all pupils in Wales to have their voices heard on school and community sport, as well as gathering important feedback from members of staff. Central South schools take the lead in their own school improvement

CSW Challenge - What Makes a Great Teacher Competition
We would like to invite all pupils in the Central South Region to submit what they think makes a ‘great teacher’ in the form of a poem.

The Welsh Government is committed to addressing the national concern for poor school attendance and all local authorities across Wales are expected to use Fixed Penalty Notices to assist them in the drive to improve attendance and prevent unnecessary absence from school, effective from September 2014.

Target Setting Workshops
To support the target setting process for 2014 – 2015 we are holding a series of workshops in mid September. The workshops will be practical in nature and involve accessing your FFTLive school site. Therefore, if you decide to attend, we would like you to bring a portable wireless device on which you can access FFTlive and also to ensure you have your user name and password and are familiar with accessing the site on the device you bring (this will avoid IT related problems on the day).

KS2 Expected Outcomes February 2014
Thank you for returning the information above in the latter part of the autumn term. In most cases schools are showing a difference between the original targets set and the position in the late autumn term. This is likely to be because some pupils were not yet secure in achieving the particular performance measures but that this position will change as they make progress during the time remaining.

SEG and PDG for 2014-2015
The guidance for 2014-2015 is largely the same as that for 2013-2014. There is a slight reduction in the overall grant for the region. However, with the likelihood that delegation rates will be at least 80% colleagues can plan at this stage on the basis that budgets will be at least the same as in 2013- 2014.

KS4 Expected Outcomes
Over the last few years secondary schools in some parts of the region have sent in information at several points during the year indicating the expected outcomes against the key measures at key stage 4. This has made an important contribution to monitoring progress towards targets during the course of the year and as catalyst to taking the necessary action with individual pupils where progress is slower than expected.
